MADEIRA-Portugal
THE FIRST OF OUR MUCH-ANTICIPATED SERIES OF HIKING TRIPS WITH OUR BELOVED GLOBETREKKER! IN MAY 2025, THE LIFETIME EXPERIENCE SETS OFF TO ENJOY THE HIKING PARADISE THAT IS MADEIRA.
On this 8-day trip, our group will cross the island of Madeira from East to West. Madeira is a verdant paradise that belongs to Portugal and is located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of North Africa. Our six-day crossing will take place under the guidance of Dimitris Despiniadis, an experienced Mountain Leader and Wilderness First Responder; we will cover 105 kilometres and 6000 metres of ascent in total, and climb the island’s highest peak, Pico Ruivo (1862 metres).
This beautiful, sub-tropical island has also been named “Hawaii of the Atlantic”. It is an island paradise that is every hiker’s dream, with trails that take you up above the clouds, epic ocean views, ancient footpaths and rich forests that are protected by UNESCO. Hundreds of years ago, the Madeirans built an intelligent network of channels and aqueducts, or “levadas”, in order to irrigate the fields on the island’s southern coastline. These, combined with the “veradas”, or mountain trails, make up the Madeiran hiking network that we will become familiar with on this trip.
Thanks to this extensive network, we will be able to cross Madeira from Easte to West in 6 days, moving from the inhabited coastal zone to the forested hinterland and the rugged peaks of the mountain range that divides the island. The terrain is moderately difficult, while the trails are very well-maintained and present no risk for hikers. The average daily distance covered will be 17.5 kilometres, with an average ascent of 1000 metres per day.
Participants are required to have a good fitness level, some previous trekking experience, equipment according to the list provided, and a positive outlook for a fun trip!
