TRAVELLING TO GREENLAND IS NOT A SIMPLE JOURNEY TO A NEW TOURIST ATTRACTION - IT IS AN EXPLORATION, BOTH ENVIRONMENTAL AND CULTURAL.

This trip is organized in collaboration with Canon Photographer Babis Giritziotis.

Our first encounter with this island began with an environmental photography project, through which we acquired experience that we would love to share with like-minded individuals. A trip to Greenland today, is a voyage to an environment and a lifestyle that is heading toward extinction. The development of technology and - even more - the unfolding of the effects of climate change, contribute to this. We hope and pray that you, the select few who choose to join us, will be open to the magic of Greenland; and that your photos will raise awareness among your own audience, for the need to protect our planet and reverse its warming.

According to Inuit mythology, the ice and the animals were created by the Sea Mother’s fingers that were chopped off. Thus, they are a part of her, and she feels for them as if they were her children. The Mother suffers for all mistakes made by humankind. When humans don’t respect the earth and its creature, the Mother’s hair becomes dirty, and tangled, a trap for the animals. And humans are visited by disease and hunger. The only way to restore balance is for humans to clean the Mother’s hair, and beg her forgiveness for their greed.

Where are we going?
Greenland (or Kalaallit Nunaat, “Land of the Greenlanders”, or Grønland in Danish) is a Danish self-governed territory. This Arctic island state is geographically, culturally and demographically located in North America, but politically, Greenland is a part of Europe. Greenland is the largest island and the largest dependent territory in the world in terms of surface area. Almost 80% of that surface area, however, is covered in ancient ice, called the Greeland Ice Cap.

Build at the mouth of a huge fjord, Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, is a unique combination of natural beauty and culture. Almost a quarter of the island’s population lives here, where tradition meets modern life. Surrounded by mountains and fjords, Nuuk is an ideal starting point for exploring the south of the island. Meanwhile, the National Museum, Katuaq Culture Home and the Art Museum are opportunities to become more familiar with Inuit culture and history.
Ilulissat is the third largest town in Greenland. It was established by Jacob Severin in 1741 as a trading post, and was initially named after him (Jakobshavn). The town’s current name means (of course!) “icebergs” in Kalaallisut (West Greenlandic). The main economic activities in Ilulissat, since its establishment about 250 years ago, are fishing and hunting. In recent years, these professions have been complemented by tourism, which has known significant growth in the past couple of decades. It is worth noting that rising temperatures caused by climate change have lead to growth in the fishing industry, as less sea ice means more time for fishing in the open sea each year.

What are we photographing?

Landscapes that are out of this world!

· Icebergs of all shapes, sizes and hues of white, as we sail between them in the Ilulissat Icefjord and in the open sea, both in the morning and with the midnight sun painting the sky in the most beautiful shades of pink and orange.
· The Eqi Glacier, also known as the “Calving Glacier”, from which tons of ice detach on a daily basis, in beautiful cascades the produce incredible imagery.

· Whales, gigantic mammals and their offspring, playing and feeding among the icebergs; also seals, seabirds, arctic foxes and arctic hares.

· Impressive landscapes and beautiful contrasts along the signposted UNESCO trails, starting at the architectural gem that is the Ilulissat Icefjord Visitor Centre.

· Colourful settlements with details that bear testimony to the daily lives of Greenlanders, their living conditions, and the history of this tough and versatile people.

· Fishers and hunters working in the narrow, busy harbour of Ilulissat, with its constant turnover of vessels and people.
· Huskies resting as they wait for winter and the beginning of the sledding season. The hullabaloo of feeding time is an unforgettable experience!

Anything else?
Greenland’s culinary tradition is not for vegetarians. Specialties include whale and seal meat and fat - not for the picky eaters among us!

And one final thing:
The museums in Nuuk will complete our acquaintance with Greenlandic culture. What’s more, our trip begins and ends in Copenhagen, at the best time of year - summer, when the whole city moves into the parks and marinas, and everyone smiles brightly!

The adventure begins! Today we meet up in the Danish capital, the beautiful and picturesque Copenhagen. Our hotel is near the airport, but those of us who fly in early will have time to explore the city. If the weather is sunny, we can observe locals and tourists swimming and sunbathing in the marinas, eat seafood at sidewalk tables next to the canals, and photograph the picturesque and colourful façades of the old buildings. For cycling enthusiasts, a rental bike ride is ideal for exploring.
