PRESENTATION
A THREE-DAY PHOTOGRAPHY TRIP DEDICATED TO LAKE KERKINI. WITH A BACKDROP OF WINTERY COLOURS AND THE SNOWY PEAKS OF MOUNT BELLES, THE AREA'S FISHERMEN (HUMAN AND AVIAN) WILL PROVIDE US WITH UNIQUE IMAGES.
Our main photographic objective will be the endangered Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus), which spends its winters on Lake Kerkini. Many thousands of other waterfowl also winter on the lake. Many rare birds of prey can be observed and photographed here, including the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos ), the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), the spotted eagle (Aquila clanga ), and the white-tailed eagle (Halliaaetus albicilla). In recent years, many new species have been observed for the area, whether migrating or wintering, such as the white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala), the Saker falcon (Falco cherrug), the flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus), the tundra swan (Cygnus columbianus), the common merganser (Mergus merganser), the lesser white-fronted goose (Anser erythropus) and other. Some of these are particularly rare, but if we are lucky (and patient!), we may be able to capture them on film!
Kerkini is one of the 10 Wetlands of International Importance of Greece (also known as Ramsar Wetlands). This lake was created in 1932 with the construction of a dam on the river Strymon, near the village of Lithotopos, and the construction of embankments to the east and west. The intention was to control the overflow of the Strymon, to contain land erosion and to irrigate the Serres plain. The current lake replaces a was a small natural lake and permanent and seasonal marshes.
During our weekend excursion we will approach life on the lake both from land and from the water, by boat; this will give us the opportunity to photograph the area’s rich fauna in ideal lighting conditions and in the perfect setting.
