Arctic Crossing

This blog post is slightly marred by the events that followed our trip – the coronavirus epidemic and a global lockdown, a situation that is still evolving but has caused significant damage to people’s lives, to the tourism industry, to the world economy…

Being as the world is at the moment, it is hard to have confidence that things will return to normal, and to make plans for the future. For us, it is doubly hard since we were forced to call off our second Arctic Crossing, due to take place between March 15th and 24th, with Norway announcing a lockdown two days before we were to travel there. This has meant depriving our valued clients of their much-anticipated trip, some financial loss for everyone involved, and an expensive group flight booking that has been put on hold indefinitely.
Yet, there is so much beauty to look back on, and ten other valued clients who did go on the trip of a lifetime!

Ten days, three countries, two vehicles and 12 adventurers, on a road trip of approximately 3,000 kilometres, all within the Arctic Circle. We flew to Kiruna in Northern Sweden, picking up our cars at the airport there and heading even further north, to Abisko. From there we travelled to the Lofoten islands, arguably one of the most spectacular landscapes on earth. High, snow-capped mountains, narrow fjords, long sandy beaches, colourful wooden houses and sturdy fishing-boats make up a scenery that you can’t help falling in love with – despite the below-freezing temperatures and blasts of icy, offshore wind!

In Finland, we returned to our beloved riverside villa outside Rovaniemi, and to familiar activities from last year: a visit to the Arktikum museum, ice-fishing, husky sledge-riding and of course, Santa’s village! One of the highlights of our stay in Rovaniemi was our party at the villa, complete with our friend George’s delightful family, good food and dancing, and – most importantly – a raffle for one lucky winner. Vasilis, an excellent photographer, won a Canon EOS R camera to bring back home with him, together with his memories and images of our journey.

The main photographic objective of this journey was, of course, to capture the Northern Lights, and we were not disappointed! From the very first night, driving to Abisko at midnight, at -20 degrees Celsius (after a severely delayed flight), the Aurora welcomed us to the Arctic Circle! We also captured the lights dancing above Skagsanden beach, and late at night above Reine… For us organizers, it was an immense pleasure to see that even the non-photographers among us were willing to spend hours in the freezing cold just for a glimpse of the incredible phenomenon.

The group’s last night was spent in a yacht hotel in Stockholm’s Gamla Stan, another unique experience! We had enough time to explore some of the city, buy some souvenirs and visit a couple of Stockholm’s unusually beautiful metro stations, which were of particular interest to our photographers. Early the next morning we waved goodbye to our ten Arctic adventurers, sending them off with memory cards full of beautiful images that were to keep them good company in the upcoming lockdown!
